Designing an SMPS Transformer
An SMPS Transformer is a type of power transformer with an alternating magnetic field. This alternating magnetic field is multiplied by the primary winding of the transformer, and couples most of the flux to the secondary windings. This causes an alternating voltage to be induced in the secondary coils, as Faraday's law dictates. While the primary winding of an SMPS Transformer is responsible for changing the amplitude of high-frequency pulses, the secondary coils are required for transferring the DC component of the pulse. In order to make a switch mode power supply work efficiently, the transformer must provide isolation from the circuits it is connected to, while providing high efficiency power usage.
The hysteresis curves that are supplied by SMPS transformer and core material manufacturers can be helpful in determining the maximum input current of the SMPS. This data is necessary for designing the proper SMPS, because SMPS units with low efficiency will heat up at high voltage and require thermal management strategies to remove the heat generated by the units.
The secondary winding of an SMPS Transformer is a little trickier to determine. It may have more than one secondary winding or it may not have any at all. A high-frequency SMPS transformer will have a ferrite core. This type of transformer has high permeability and is therefore a good choice for high-frequency transformer applications.
The primary considerations when designing an SMPS transformer are its core type and shape. Another important consideration is the anticipated switching frequency. Using a round center post core will allow you to reduce the number of turns and reduce the PC board space. Round center post cores are also smaller, which makes them more suitable for high-frequency designs.
The SMPS transformer is an integral part of a SMPS, and is used to convert voltages from one polarity to the other. The typical SMPS transformer runs at frequencies between 200kHz and 2MHz. The SMPS transformers use a ferrite core with one or more bobbin parts.
The efficiency of an SMPS transformer is low. This is because the output voltage is high, resulting in a high current and voltage. Moreover, the magnetic core of an SMPS transformer is subject to strong hysteresis. This can result in heat dissipation.
To improve power handling efficiency, the optimum placement of the secondary has a low leakage rate. This is achieved by placing it close to the primary winding. Moreover, the windings of a multiple output transformer should be constructed using triple-insulated wires and minimal tape layers. These windings should also meet international safety standards.
An SMPS is a device that steps up or down AC voltage. It works on the principle of induction, in which an alternating magnetic field is created and the current flows in both directions. The output voltage of a SMPS is then rectified. Two types of transformer are used in switch mode power supplies. One type of transformer uses an ordinary silicon diode while the other uses a Schottky diode.
