High Frequency Smps Transformer
High frequency SMPS transformers are transformers that convert unregulated AC mains power to a DC output voltage. These transformers can be used in various applications that require varying voltage levels. Generally, ferrite cores are used in high frequency transformers. Their permeability varies from 2000 to 2500 and is dependent on temperature and flux density.
This type of transformer performs three functions: power transfer, voltage conversion, and isolation. The primary winding induces a magnetic flux change in the core, which is transmitted to the secondary winding. The transformer also performs voltage conversion and isolation, by adjusting the turns ratio of the primary and secondary windings.
A high frequency transformer is an integral part of all electronic devices. High frequency transformers are the backbone of modern switched mode power supplies. These features ensure that the transformers do not produce electromagnetic interference and that they can withstand external electromagnetic interference. One of the major causes of electromagnetic interference is magnetostriction of the magnetic core. The attraction between the core and winding wires is responsible for this phenomenon.
High frequency transformers are essential in modern electronic devices, especially high-frequency inverters. They are available in a wide range of topologies, including buck, boost, and forward-pull. The most common applications for high frequency SMPS transformers include high-frequency welding machines and high-frequency inverters.
High frequency currents tend to flow on the surface of conductors, but the skin effect is reduced by using Litz wires. These wires are made by weaving multiple smaller conductors together. The size of the strands depends on the frequency of the transformer, with smaller strands used for higher frequencies. The weaving process reduces the skin effect, allowing the current to flow through all strands more evenly.
