High Voltage Flyback Transformer
A high-voltage flyback transformer is a device that provides voltage transformation and isolation. Its typical design can be seen in Figure 1. When the primary switch is closed, a current is conducted through the primary coil and sets up a magnetic field in the core. The switching device, usually a transistor or MOSFET, turns the primary coil's input voltage on and off. In a similar manner, a diode prevents current from flowing in the secondary coil.
The output voltage of the transformer can be from 10 to 20 kV. This voltage is not sinusoidal but instead takes the shape of an arc. This arc occurs when two highly conductive materials are placed close together, and ionizes the air between them. The arc can also occur when a breaker is energized or an isolator is working. This phenomenon is known as the Corona effect.
A flyback transformer is an excellent choice for high-voltage power applications. It is lighter and smaller than other transformers, and offers a failsafe mechanism to prevent transformer accidents. It can also store direct or alternative current, so it can be used in a variety of applications. Manufacturers of high voltage flyback transformers make these devices in large quantities and sell them at a competitive price.
A flyback transformer is composed of a primary winding and a secondary winding, as well as a rectifying unit. The primary winding is typically smaller than the secondary winding, and the secondary winding has a higher number of turns. The primary and secondary windings are made of copper, which is the same material as those in a conventional transformer. This makes the output voltage much higher than conventional transformers while the overall power requirement is small.
Another type of high voltage flyback transformer is known as a line output transformer. It works by transferring the line voltage from one end of a circuit to the other end. The primary winding of a flyback transformer can be powered by either a DC circuit or a rectifying circuit.
Another AC Flyback Transformer is the Disc-shaped AC Flyback Transformer, which is commonly found in black and white televisions. It is typically used in combination with a vacuum tube rectifier and has an output voltage over 20kV AC at 15kHz. Modern CRT televisions use a DST flyback, which features an integrated high voltage filtering capacitor that can store a large amount of charge and provide an output voltage of up to 30kV.
