SMD Pulse Flyback Transformer
The SMD Pulse Flyback Transformer is a special type of transformer. It is a type of rectifying transformer that can be energized with a DC pulse. The primary and secondary sides of the transformer are connected through a capacitor, which maintains the output voltage at a constant level. There are two types of these transformers: continuous conduction and discontinuous conduction. The continuous conduction mode never reaches zero, while the discontinuous conduction mode has an idle period throughout the cycle.
The SMD Pulse Flyback Transformer is available in a variety of package options. Typically, it comes in a T&R package for easy assembly and testing. In addition, it can be used as an isolation transformer for IGBT gate drivers. This feature reduces the component count and simplifies circuit requirements.
The primary current is the most critical requirement for flyback transformers, and this requires the highest peak and primary saturation current. If the primary current is not high enough, the primary inductance of the transformer will drop, causing core saturation. As a result, the primary current will exceed the energy storage capability of the flyback transformer.
Flyback transformers are similar to traditional transformers, but they contain a high voltage arc and are not suitable for long-distance transmission. They are small in size and use the same winding methods as a standard transformer. A typical circuit diagram of a flyback transformer will show the number of turns on each winding. The main winding L1 is wide, while the secondary winding, L2, is narrower than L1. Additionally, a capacitor is placed on the input side of the transformer while a switch is located on the output side.
Typically, the output voltage of a flyback transformer is around 20 KV, and the kick back voltage is at approximately 200 KHz. While the output voltage of a flyback transformer may seem low, its ability to raise voltages to high levels makes them an ideal choice for a high-voltage switched-mode power supply.
