Types of Insulation Used in Electronic Transformers
A transformer is an electrical device containing an insulating material. The materials used in transformers come in many different forms and have various applications. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, some materials are more conductive than others. Some materials are suitable for high power levels, while others are not.
To reduce the risk of fire, electrical transformers should be insulated with materials that are more resistant to heat. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) recommends limiting the amount of heat that can reach transformers. This temperature limit is 6 degrees Celsius, which is a much stricter limit than the eight-degree C rule. One of the problems of insulating materials is that they are degraded more quickly in the presence of moisture. The water content in cellulosic materials determines the decomposition rate of CO2. Therefore, the higher the water content, the higher the rate of decomposition.
Transformers are insulated using both liquid and solid materials. The most common material for insulation is mineral oil. This is used because of its high dielectric strength and heat transfer properties. It is also able to recover from dielectric stress. Other materials used for transformer insulation include solid insulation and wood-based paperboard barriers. Mineral oil has a dielectric constant of about 2.2, while solid insulation has a dielectric constant of around 4.0. However, the dielectric stress in oil is greater than that of pressboard, so insulating oil may restrict structure design.
The oil used in transformers often has high levels of moisture, which can lead to a leak. In addition, water can be a sign that paper insulation is failing. Although this can be an indicator of wetness, it does not mean the transformer is unreliable. The moisture content will be higher if the transformer is in the presence of high humidity or heat.
The Nomex type of insulation is ideal for dry-type transformers. It allows transformers to be installed close to loads. Dry-type transformers can also be installed inside buildings, schools, hospitals, and apartments. These transformers are insulated with less core steel and conductor than wet-type transformers. The reduced size makes them more economical, and smaller cores also lead to lower no-load losses.
The insulation rating of a transformer is determined by its ability to withstand an increase in temperature. The NEMA and ANSI standards use a classification system and define insulation classes. Each class is rated in degus. This translates into a higher overload capacity. However, it is important not to exceed these limits as this can shorten the transformer's life.
