Choosing the Right SMPS Transformer
When choosing the right SMPS Transformer, the selection of a proper core size is essential. The core gap will depend on the number of primary turns and the inductance specification. Inductance is usually measured in the form of an AL value. For high-power and multiple output applications, round center-post cores are a good option. These cores have optimal surface areas and are highly efficient. Furthermore, they require less space on the PC board and require fewer turns. Finally, the wire size should be selected to minimize the winding loss.
In an SMPS, the primary winding is connected to a high-voltage capacitor while the secondary winding is connected to a power driver. The power driver may be a separate high-voltage MOSFET. This combination creates an alternating magnetic field, which induces alternating voltage in the secondary coils. As a result, the SMPS transformer provides isolation between the circuits. Hence, it is imperative to select a high-quality transformer with an appropriate design and specs.
SMPS Transformers are widely used in different fields. They are used in personal computers, DC/DC converters, machine tools, railway systems, and security systems. They are also used in solar battery chargers, inverters, and lighting supplies. In fact, SMPS transformers are the perfect choice for high-frequency applications. These transformers are smaller than conventional transformers and use ferrite cores.
SMPS transformers are generally more efficient than conventional transformers. Typical efficiency levels of 60-70% are possible with proper design. The SMPS transformer is less susceptible to power loss due to switching losses, EMI, and core losses. An efficient design will avoid these losses, minimize inductor saturation, and avoid active rectification.

SMPS transformers are made with three windings: a primary winding and at least one secondary winding. Some also include auxiliary windings. The primary winding is the innermost winding of the transformer, which connects directly to the primary side of the SMPS. The primary winding is usually larger than the secondary winding.
Another important characteristic of SMPS transformers is their low operating frequency. If it is not regulated correctly, it can cause significant noise. In addition to noise, SMPS can also cause interference in audio and digital circuits. In addition, SMPS can lead to harmonic distortion when the power factor is not corrected. To prevent this, SMPSs should have an EMI/RFI filter between the input terminals and the bridge rectifier.
