The integrated parallel matrix transformer has an 8-layer PCB with termination layers on the sides. The primary windings are positioned on layers 3 and 6 on the PCB, while the secondary windings are placed above and below the primary windings. This is a very effective way to reduce the resistance of the AC windings.
The number of turns in an inductor depends on its core size and type of material used to make it. A good way to choose a powder core is to use the manufacturer's charts to choose the peak bias, which is H=0.4xpxN/le (Oersted). Then, make any necessary corrections based on the desired LxIpk2.
The inductor is a critical component of a DC/DC converter. It transfers alternating AC energy through electromagnetic induction. High inductance values are difficult to control and can be a limiting factor for efficiency. They are commonly used in power supplies, and have many applications in information technology.
The integrated transformer-inductor has low weight and is small in size. It can also be used in an electronic gas discharge lamp ballast circuit. Its design features include a planar winding structure that divides the primary current evenly. Its primary winding has multiple layers that are interconnected, to reduce conduction losses.
The main difference between a transformer and an inductor is that a transformer is AC-driven. The primary coil produces magnetic flux that induces current in the secondary coil. This current is drawn from the source and is reflected back to the source. If both the primary and secondary coils are perfect, the total AC voltage is zero.
The present invention eliminates these issues by eliminating the leakage inductance and the stray magnetic flux. The result is a transformer with high efficiency. The primary winding length is minimized and losses are minimized. Further, the winding structure allows the primary winding to be implemented on a multi-layer PCB.
A single-core inductor 500 can have six primary windings and two pillars. This example also illustrates how the inductor and transformer can share the same primary and secondary windings.
