Typically, a high frequency flyback transformer is used for switching power supply applications, such as in DC-DC converters or DC-DC controllers. Its main function is to supply voltage transformation and isolation. But it also has the ability to store energy in its core and then dump it into the load.
There are two main types of flyback transformers. The first type is a DC flyback transformer. This type has an internal diode and a primary winding. The second type is a line output transformer. The line output transformer is a smaller, higher-efficiency version that is used in DC-DC controllers and other high-power applications.
A flyback transformer is designed to work in either continuous or discontinuous conduction mode. When the primary current is turned off, the magnetic field collapses and stores energy. The stored energy is then added to the next incoming pulse from the primary winding. This results in a very high pulse of electricity at the output. A flyback transformer may also be equipped with extra windings to further boost the pulse.
The most common type of flyback transformer is the DC flyback transformer. It has an internal diode and a series of windings that produce pulses of several volts. These windings are designed to produce a very large voltage pulse when the magnetic field collapses. These pulses are then converted into direct current by a half wave rectifier.
An improved multi-end mode flyback HFI-5LI has been designed and developed in a laboratory prototype. It has the advantage of producing high output current, high voltage, good quality output voltage, and lower envelopes. It can also provide fast transient response and remote differential feedback. This type of transformer is ideal for digital cameras, LED driver applications, and switch-mode power supplies.
Flyback transformers are designed for use at higher frequencies, such as 15-50kHz. They also require less component count and have greater efficiency. They are typically used in high-frequency inverters, high-frequency welding machines, and switch-mode power supplies. The core of a flyback transformer is composed of two separable "U" cores. They are held together by a metal clamp. A flyback can also be repaired by using flyback core super glue.
In general, a flyback transformer has an internal primary winding and an auxiliary low voltage winding. The primary winding is driven by a switch, using a DC supply, and the secondary winding is connected to a diode in reverse bias. The combination of the winding polarity ensures that no energy transfers from the primary to the secondary when the switch is closed.
The core material of a flyback transformer is ferrite. Ferrite has a higher resistance to eddy currents, so it increases the transformer's ability to handle current. It also has a large air gap, which reduces the permeability of the core. In addition, the large core size allows for more clearance and greater operating power. A flyback transformer is small, but it has the ability to store a lot of energy.
