Why do high frequency transformers use high frequency ferrite cores and low frequency transformers use high permeability silicon steel sheets?
The choice of core and cost also has a great relationship, if the low-frequency transformer chooses ferrite as the core, then the best ferrite flux density is only about 4000 Gauss, and the choice of silicon steel sheet has more than 16000 Gauss. That is to say, with silicon steel around 100 times, with ferrite the same core cross-sectional area of the number of circles around 400 times, so many 300 times around the price of copper wire is far more than the price of silicon steel sheet transformer. Especially in recent years, the price of copper has risen very sharply. Moreover, the number of turns, copper wire will be thicker, the area will increase, the volume of the transformer will also become larger.
Silicon steel sheet has high permeability and relatively low loss value. Ferrite is small mainly because the loss of magnetic core at high frequency is mainly vortex loss, so ferrite core is used at high frequency power transformer.
